Here are 7 quick ways to save money when purchasing your next flight.

Fly on a Tuesday or Wednesday

Tuesday and Wednesday are the weekdays which typically see the least amount of air traffic, so they are typically the cheapest days to fly. Fridays and Sundays typically have the most air travelers and are typically the most expensive days to fly. Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays tend to be anywhere in between and are always good days to check as well.

Check Multiple Search Engines

When researching flights, keep in mind that not all flight search engines are the same. Sites such as Expedia have been found to inflate the costs of their tickets by a larger margin than other comparable sites in order to make more money. Now, this doesn’t mean you should never use Expedia, but you should be checking prices through a few different search engines to give you the best chance of finding the best deal.

Use an Incognito Window or Private Browsing

Flight search engines will read your cookies and will slowly increase the prices for flights you search multiple times in an attempt to try to make you purchase tickets early in your shopping process. The easy way to work around this is to use an incognito window or delete your cookies each time you search for flights.

Purchase Tickets Seven Weeks Ahead of Departure Date

According to U.S. News & World Report, the cheapest time to buy tickets is about 7 weeks before a trip. If you are planning a trip during the holidays, the ideal window for purchasing tickets is 14 weeks in advance.

Break Up Big Groups into Smaller Ones

Airlines will typically offer only a certain number of tickets at discounted prices. Once those are purchased, the price for tickets increases. If you are trying to book a large group at one time, you might not be offered the discounted rate due to the large size of your group. For example, let’s say an airline has 3 tickets left at their discounted rate and you need to purchase seats for 6. If you try to buy all 6 tickets at once, you will only be able to buy those tickets at full price. However, if you break up your group of 6 into two groups of 3, you will be able to buy 3 tickets at the discounted price and 3 at the full price thereby saving you money. The best way to see if breaking up your group will be worth it is to research prices for one passenger first and then for a larger group. This allows you to see if there is a change in the per ticket price between the two searches.

Check Alternative Airports

Many big cities have multiple airports which service them. Make sure to research flights for each of these airports. Even if a nearby airport is relatively far away from your final destination, the difference in airfare could make driving to or from a more distant airport worth it.
